Black Pepper

Black pepper (Piper nigrum), popularly known as the King of Spices, is one of the oldest and most valued spices in the world. Native to the Malabar Coast of India, particularly Kerala, black pepper has been cherished for centuries for its rich aroma, sharp flavor, and numerous health benefits. This flowering vine belongs to the Piperaceae family and thrives in tropical climates with warm temperatures, adequate rainfall, and well-drained soil. The plant produces small, round berries known as peppercorns, which are harvested when they begin to turn red. These berries are then boiled briefly and sun-dried, transforming into the black, wrinkled peppercorns that are used across the globe.
